Preview Roundups
April 09, 2017
New Jersey at Detroit 5:00 PM ET
Henrik Zetterberg figures to have mixed emotions Sunday as he skates in his 1,000th career game when the Detroit Red Wings say farewell to Joe Louis Arena with a matchup against the New Jersey Devils. The captain, who leads Detroit in scoring with 66 points, will become the 12th Swedish player to reach the milestone in the NHL.
Buffalo at Tampa Bay 5:00 PM ET
One day after having their hopes for a fourth straight trip to the playoffs come to an end, the Tampa Bay Lightning will try to end an injury-plagued season on high note when they host the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday. The Lightning are 7-1-1 in their last nine games and won two straight do-or-die contests this week, but Toronto rallied to beat Pittsburgh 5-3 on Saturday and grabbed the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Ottawa at NY Islanders 5:00 PM ET
Despite a spirited finishing kick by the New York Islanders, Sunday's regular-season finale against the visiting Ottawa Senators was rendered meaningless when Toronto clinched the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference Saturday night. Ottawa also has nothing to play for after securing second place in the Atlantic Division on Saturday.
Colorado at St. Louis 6:00 PM ET
With third place in the Central Division locked up, the St. Louis Blues look to head into the playoffs with a three-game winning streak as they host the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday in the regular-season finale for both teams. The Blues secured a first-round matchup against second-place Minnesota with a 5-4 shootout victory at Carolina on Saturday.
Columbus at Toronto 6:00 PM ET
The Toronto Maple Leafs are going to the playoffs for just the second time in 13 years and can improve their standing by earning more points Sunday, when they close out the regular season at home against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Maple Leafs rallied to beat Pittsburgh 5-3 on Saturday and clinch their postseason spot but need one point to secure third place in the Atlantic Division and play Ottawa in the first round instead of Presidents’ Trophy-winning Washington.
Pittsburgh at NY Rangers 7:00 PM ET
What had loomed as one of the most intriguing regular-season finales lost any luster for both teams when the Pittsburgh Penguins visit the New York Rangers on Sunday night. The Penguins already have secured second place in the Metropolitan while division rival New York is locked into the first wild card in the Eastern Conference.
Carolina at Philadelphia 7:00 PM ET
The Philadelphia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes were unable to gain any significant mileage from wildly successful streaks this season, and as a result found themselves in the same familiar place: out of the playoffs. With little more than pride on the line, Philadelphia looks to fend off Carolina for sole possession of sixth place in the Metropolitan Division when the teams meet at Wells Fargo Center on Sunday.
Florida at Washington 7:00 PM ET
The Washington Capitals are not taking their foot off the gas as the regular season draws to a close as they look to register a fifth consecutive victory when they host the Florida Panthers on Sunday. The Capitals, who have clinched their second consecutive Presidents’ Trophy, have earned at least one point in 12 of their last 13 games (11-1-1) after posting a solid 3-1 win at Boston on Saturday.
Los Angeles at Anaheim 8:30 PM ET
Although the Anaheim Ducks can clinch their fifth consecutive Pacific Division title on Sunday, coach Randy Carlyle and crew have long insisted that qualifying for the NHL's second season was the lone goal for the club. While that may be the public rallying cry, the Ducks are playing their best hockey in the midst of a 13-game point streak (10-0-3) and can finish atop the division by securing just one point against the visiting Los Angeles Kings.
Vancouver at Edmonton 9:00 PM ET
The Edmonton Oilers already secured home ice for the first round of the postseason but have an opportunity to do so throughout the Pacific Division playoffs when they host the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. Edmonton, which ended a 10-season playoff drought, needs another win over the Canucks and a regulation loss by Anaheim against Los Angeles to win the division title.
