Nolan Patrick scored the tie-breaking goal a little more than seven minutes into the third period Tuesday night for the visiting Philadelphia Flyers, who went on to beat the New Jersey Devils, 5-3, in Newark, N.J.
James van Riemsdyk scored a pair of power-play goals -- one late in the first and one early in the second -- while Joel Farabee and Ivan Provorov added insurance goals later in the third for Philadelphia, which bounced back from a 6-1 loss Saturday to the Boston Bruins. Goalie Brian Elliott made 23 saves.
Michael McLeod and Travis Zajac scored in the second period and Pavel Zacha scored late in the third for the Devils, who have lost two of three. Goalie Scott Wedgewood recorded 26 saves.
The Flyers went ahead on a pair of uncannily similar power-play goals produced by van Riemsdyk and Provorov.
Van Riemsdyk, stationed in front of Wedgewood, put up his stick to redirect a shot by Provorov under Wedgewood's glove with 4:57 left in the first. The duo hooked up again 39 seconds into the second, when van Riemsdyk backhanded a redirect of Provorov's shot from just in front of the blue line.
The Devils cut the gap in half exactly 11 minutes later. Miles Wood backhanded a no-look pass from behind the net between Provorov and Justin Braun and to a streaking McLeod, who tucked a shot between Elliott's legs for his first NHL goal.
Zajac leaped in front of Elliott and redirected a shot by Andreas Johnsson to tie the score with 3:17 left in the period.
Claude Giroux set up the tie-breaking goal by carrying the puck near the net and luring P.K. Subban and Wedgewood into sprawling attempts to stop a shot. Instead, Giroux dished to Patrick, whose shot sailed over the prone Wedgewood with 12:57 left.
A turnover by Smith deep in the Devils' zone led to the eventual goal by Farabee with 7:24 left. Scott Laughton picked the puck from Smith and fired a backhander at the net before Farabee pounced on the rebound.
Provorov scored an empty-netter with 1:36 left and Zacha put back the rebound of a shot by Nicholas Merkley 28 seconds later.
