Kings 4, Oilers 1: Jeff Carter had a goal and an assist as host Los Angeles won for the fifth time in seven games (5-1-1).

Mike Richards and defenseman Slava Voynov also scored goals and Jonathan Quick made 23 saves as the Kings moved ahead of Pacific Division-rival San Jose and into sole possession of fourth place in the Western Conference. Blue-liner Drew Doughty added an empty-net tally for Los Angeles.

Magnus Paajarvi scored the only goal for Edmonton, which was outshot 39-24 and dropped its second straight on its four-game road trip to remain three points behind eighth-place St. Louis.

Richards got the Kings on the board only 98 seconds into the contest, accepting a pass from Carter and ripping a one-timer past Devan Dubnyk (35 saves). Carter doubled the lead on the power play at 15:35 with his 22nd goal - and fourth in five games - by redirecting captain Dustin Brown's feed past Dubnyk.

Edmonton cut the deficit in half when Paajarvi collected a rebound at the side of the net and tucked it home 2:18 into the second, but Voynov restored the two-goal edge just over six minutes later with a shot along the ice from the right point to halt a 16-game goalless drought.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Quick improved to 9-1-4 lifetime against the Oilers with his 144th career victory, moving him into second place on the franchise all-time list. ... Oilers rookie RW Nail Yakupov picked up an assist on Paajarvi's goal, giving him six points in his last six games and 21 on the season. ... Kings RW Justin Williams assisted on Voynov's goal to give him points in six straight contests, but his five-game goal-scoring streak came to an end.
