Defenseman Willie Mitchell scored the game-winner and Mike Richards recorded a goal and an assist as the visiting Los Angeles Kings edged the St. Louis Blues 3-2 on Tuesday.

Anze Kopitar added his 10th goal and Jonathan Bernier made 23 saves for the Kings, who have won four of their last five and are working their way out of a season-long offensive slump with 13 goals in their last three regulation victories.

Mitchell, a bruising blue liner with 24 career goals in parts of 13 seasons in the NHL, found himself with the puck above the left point after a feed from Simon Gage. Mitchell wound up and fired a slap shot through traffic, sneaking it between Jaroslav Halak’s pads to give Los Angeles the lead with 5:49 remaining.

The Blues lost in regulation for the first time since Ken Hitchcock took over the team, falling to 4-1-2 under their new boss.

St. Louis jumped on top with Alex Steen’s eighth goal just 1:07 into the first period. The Kings got it back on the power play in the second, when Kopitar beat Halak.

Richards and Vladimir Sobotka traded goals in the third.

There was a scary moment with two seconds left when Los Angeles defenseman Drew Doughty crosschecked T.J. Oshie head-first into the boards.
