Aljaz Kunc scored 12 points and Gabe Kalscheur added 11 as No. 17 Iowa State remained undefeated and tied its best start in school history with a 47-37 victory over visiting Jackson State in a nonconference game on Sunday in Ames, Iowa.
Kunc was 3-for-5 shooting, including a perfect, 3-for-3 from 3-point range, and had five rebounds for the Cyclones, whose 10-0 start equals the mark they set during the 2013-2014 and 1996-1997 seasons. Izaiah Brockington added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds and Tyrese Hunter added six points.
Iowa State shot just 34.9 percent (15-for-43) from the field, including 38.5 percent (5-for-13) from 3-point range. The Cyclones held Jackson State to 40 percent shooting from the field, including 3-for-13 from beyond the arc. Iowa State forced 22 turnovers that led to 14 points.
Jackson State (2-7) was led by Jonas James' 11 points, while Terence Lewis added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Leading 28-20 at halftime, Iowa State opened the second half on a 9-2 run to take a 37-22 lead on Brockington's layup with 15:30 left in the game. The Tigers didn't pull closer than seven points the rest of the way.
After Jackson State scored the game's first four points, Iowa State scored the next 19 to take a 15-point lead after Brockington's jumper with a little more than eight minutes left in the first half.
The Cyclones controlled the first half the rest of the way and took a 28-20 lead at halftime.
Kalscheur scored nine points to pace the Cyclones in the opening 20 minutes that ended with Iowa State ahead 28-20.
The Cyclones shot 38.5 percent (10-for-26) from the field, including 40 percent (4-for-10) from 3-point range, in the first half.
While Jackson State shot 47.4 percent (9-for-19) in the first half, the Tigers committed 11 turnovers that the Cyclones converted into 10 points.
