Texas A&M 62, Stephen F. Austin 54: Ray Turner finished with 15 points and eight rebounds as the Aggies handed the Lumberjacks their first loss of the season.

Freshman J’Mychal Reese matched a career high with 15 points for Texas A&M (7-1), which defeated Stephen F. Austin (5-1) for the 14th straight time and improved to 19-3 all-time against its in-state rival from the Southland Conference.

The Aggies used an early 13-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 18-6, but needed a late 5-0 surge at the end of the first half to take a 31-28 advantage into the break.

Although Texas A&M would not give back the lead, it also could not stretch the margin past eight points the rest of the way despite holding Stephen F. Austin scoreless for the opening 4:47 of the second half. As the Lumberjacks made one final push to move within 52-48 with 3:44 remaining, Turner and Reese combined to score the final 10 points for the Aggies to preserve the win.

Taylor Smith and Antonio Bostic each scored 14 points to pace Stephen F. Austin.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Texas A&M leading scorer Elston Turner appeared to sprain his ankle early in the first half when teammate Andrew Young fell into the back of his leg. After riding a stationary bike to begin the second half, Turner returned to action and finished with 10 points. … The Aggies enjoyed a significant advantage at the foul line, hitting 21-of-29 while Stephen F. Austin went just 3-of-6. … The Lumberjacks, who lead the nation in scoring defense, allowed more than 60 points for the first time this season.
