Ty Abbott and Rihards Kuksiks combined for seven 3-pointers, as Arizona State grabbed a much-needed 71-48 victory over road-weary Gardner-Webb Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena.
Abbott scored 18 points and Kuksiks added 15 for the Sun Devils, who snapped a three-game losing skid and recorded their first win since Trent Lockett’s buzzer-beater against Weber State in the semifinal of the Great Alaska Shootout on Nov. 26.
Lockett, the team’s leading scorer, had 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals against the Runnin’ Bulldogs.
Arizona State jumped out to an early 14-3 lead behind 3-pointers from Abbott and Kuksiks and stretched the lead to 15, before settling for a 37-25 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs got within eight in the second half but a dunk and 3-pointer over a one-minute span by Abbott pushed the edge to 65-46 with 4:06 remaining.
Jonathan Moore and Brian McNair scored 11 points each for Gardner-Webb (6-7), which was playing its ninth of 10 straight games on the road.
