Despite being outshot and outrebounded, Oregon State still walked away a winner in its season debut.

The Beavers took advantage of a Texas-Arlington offense that was sharp at times and then sloppy, and the result was a 71-56 victory at the Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore., in the first meeting between the schools.

Texas-Arlington outshot Oregon State 48.8 percent (21-for-43) to 42.9 percent (27-for-63) and had 35 rebounds to the Beavers’ 31. However, Oregon State held a 13-6 edge in offensive rebounds, and the Beavers' defense forced 24 turnovers. Oregon State outscored the Mavericks 30-14 in points off turnovers, and 26-15 in bench points.

Oregon State (1-0) led 37-35 at halftime, and started the second half on a 6-0 run that made the cushion a little bit safer for the Beavers.

Omari Johnson, a 6-foot-9 senior forward, led the Beavers with 15 points, and Ahmad Starks came off the bench to score 14 points. Lathen Wallace and Angus Brandt had 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Texas-Arlington, which lost four of its five starters from last year’s squad, picked up 15 points from LaMarcus Reed, the lone returning starter. Jordan Reves added 12 points.
