ATLANTA -- Miami's wild-card hopes wouldn't be so faint if right-hander Jose Urena had been able to match his road success at home and the Marlins had fared better against the Atlanta Braves.

Urena, stepping up as the staff ace, improved to 9-1 away from Miami as the Marlins snapped a five-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory Friday night.

"He's kind of been that guy that time in and time out keeps us in a game," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "It's good to see, a guy you've watched develop and get better."

Urena (13-6) had no explanation for his nearly spotless record on the road compared to 4-5 at home.

"I try to do it the same," he said.

Mattingly said Urena basically does.

"His stuff is consistent throughout the game and he's consistent start to start," Mattingly said. "You see some guys, there stuff kind of varies at time. Jose's stuff is pretty much the same every time he's out there."

Derek Dietrich homered, Dee Gordon singled twice to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and swiped his 50th base, and Miami (68-73) won for the second time in the past 12 games and fifth in 13 meetings against the Braves this year.

Urena, 2-1 against the Braves, allowed three hits over 6 1/3 innings. The only damage came on a homer by Freddie Freeman and Urena matched that run with a single for his first career RBI.

"He's pitched really good against us. Just look at his numbers," Braves manager Brian Snitker said. "He's been tough on us."

Urena, who struck out five, departed in the seventh after his second walk and Jarlin Garcia got out of a bases-loaded jam to preserve a two-run lead after hitting a batter and walking another.

The Marlins broke things open with four runs in the ninth. Miguel Rojas doubled for his second RBI of the game and Tyler Moore had a two-run single.

Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz (10-12) struck out six of the last nine he faced and allowed just one hit in his final 13 batters, but the right-hander lost his sixth straight decision as the Braves (62-78) couldn't improve to 6-2 at home against Miami.

"He got going and kind of found a rhythm," Snitker said. "He went out and was kind of trying to throw too hard. Then when he started flowing, he's out of pitches. He needs to learn to start off the way he ended."

Foltynewicz gave up three runs on six hits, walked one and struck out eight in this third straight solid outing after giving up 20 runs in the previous three starts.

"Ending the way I did was a positive," Foltynewicz said. "The early innings I think I just get a little too fast with everything. That's when mechanics get a little off and I can't throw strikes consistently. After the third (inning), I think I really started to settle down and get in a groove."

The Marlins scored twice in the second inning and Dietrich made it 3-0 by pulling his 10th homer leading off the third over the right field wall.

Miami's two-run second featured a double by Justin Bour in his first at-after missing six weeks with an oblique strain and Urena's drove in his first career run with his fourth hit of the season.

"It took a long time, but I made it," Urena said of the RBI.

Freeman cut into the Marlins' lead with his 25th homer in the fourth inning, sending a drive into the seats behind the left-center field fence.

NOTES: RF Giancarlo Stanton, leading the majors with 53 homers but in a 4-for-39 slump, was walked intentionally as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning after not starting for the first time since July 30. ... Marlins 1B Justin Bour, who had been on the DL since July 25 with a right oblique strain, was 1-for-3 with a double and walk in his return. ... Braves C Tyler Flowers, on the DL since Aug. 30 with a bruised left wrist, was 1-for-4. ... OF Ronald Acuna, the Braves top prospect, was named Minor League Player of the Year by Baseball America. The 19-year-old batted .325 with 21 homers, 82 RBIs and 44 stolen bases, finishing the season with Triple-A Gwinnett.
