DETROIT -- Dallas Keuchel's lukewarm return to the Houston rotation was burned out of the spotlight by Josh Reddick's red-hot night.

Reddick belted a three-run home run in the eighth inning after hitting two sacrifice flies for a five-RBI night that rallied the Houston Astros to a 6-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.

"It was a big night for him," Houston manager A.J. Hinch said. "He had the two sac flies and I told him, 'Go get another RBI,' and he said, 'How about three.'

"I think the guys hitting in front of him did a good job of setting him up nicely. Nothing bigger than the eighth inning homer."

The Astros trailed 5-3 entering the eighth inning. But Bruce Rondon (1-2) gave up singles to Derek Fisher and Jose Altuve, his third hit of the game, before hanging a slider that Reddick drove into the right field seats for his 10th home run of the season.

"Both Altuve and Fisher at the top did a good job of getting on base," Hinch said, "but Altuve just continues to be Jose Altuve. There's no other way to describe him other than he's in the elite category across the board.

"They pitch him away, he hits the ball off the right-center field wall; they pitch him in he hits the ball down the line. Continues the inning to set up Reddick with the two singles. He's usually always in the middle of something that we're doing right."

Rondon coughed up the lead handed to him by Jordan Zimmermann, who gave up six hits and three runs in seven innings.

It was Detroit's fourth loss in a row and plopped the Tigers (45-56) a season-low 11 games below .500.

It's been a rough week for Rondon, who was ejected Wednesday night for hitting Mike Moustakas of Kansas City with a pitch after the Royals had rolled up a 16-2 lead on the Tigers.

"Since he's been up (with the Tigers), he's been pitching the eighth," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said, "and he's done a pretty good job overall. I talked to him earlier in the day, and his head seemed in the right place, so I told him to be ready for the eighth as usual.

"When Bruce is into the outing, he's a lot more effective. On Wednesday, he was just mopping up, but this was a close game, so I thought he would be focused and get a chance to redeem himself. His slider was just up a couple times and I didn't think he had a good fastball.

"Right now, he's on the team so I have to use him."

Keuchel, making his first start since June 2 because of neck problems, had command issues and lasted just three innings. He gave up six hits, three runs and three walks with three strikeouts while throwing 79 pitches.

Brad Peacock (9-1), displaced from the rotation by Keuchel, picked up the win after four innings of three-hit, two-run relief. Chris Devenski pitched the eighth and Ken Giles claimed his 22nd save with a scoreless ninth.

"I thought he wasn't sharp early," Hinch said of Keuchel. "A couple of 30-pitch innings early are kind of hard to overcome. His stuff got a little bit better, I think he felt good, he just kind of ran out of pitches. We were hoping to be in the 75-80 range over five innings. It happened over three."

Mikie Mahtook walked with two outs in the seventh and gave the Tigers a 5-3 lead when he came around to score on a sharp single to right by Victor Martinez. Third base coach Dave Clark waved Mahtook home when right fielder Norichika Aoki lobbed the ball to second instead of throwing home.

Marwin Gonzalez, playing short in the absence of injured Carlos Correa, smashed his 19th home run of the season to right with two outs in the sixth, drawing Houston (68-34) within a run at 4-3.

Miguel Cabrera hit his first home run since July 15 and his third of the month when he launched a hanging slider from Peacock near the flagpole in the visitors' bullpen in left-center to put the Tigers ahead 4-2. The home run was his 13th of the year and came leading off the fifth.

The Astros pulled within 3-2 in the third when Fisher singled with one out, Altuve doubled and Reddick hit his second sacrifice fly of the game, this one to center.

Nicholas Castellanos hit a three-run homer in the second inning to give Detroit a 3-1 lead. Dixon Machado drew a two-out walk, Ian Kinsler doubled down the left-field line and Castellanos followed with his 15th home run.

Altuve tripled with one out in the first and gave Houston a 1-0 start on Reddick's first sacrifice fly to right.

Reddick drew some notice for a quick bat-flip after his home run but he claimed it was in response to a pose by Castellanos after his home run.

"A big swing gives us the lead late in the game. You're pumped up. Your teammates are pumped up," Reddick said. "The way the three-run home run was kind of pimped in the third wasn't really setting well with us. I felt like we had all the right to do it right back. Big moment for us, big moment for me as well. I felt there was no wrong in that.

"I don't really pimp home runs. I don't like getting hit by the pitch. I don't want to be the guy getting a teammate hit by the pitch."

NOTES: Houston CF George Springer was placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to July 25 with left quad discomfort. ... SS Jose Iglesias was a non-starter for Detroit on Friday with manager Brad Ausmus wanting to give UTIL Dixon Machado an infrequent start. ... The Astros activated reliever RHP Will Smith (right shoulder) from the disabled list along with LHP Dallas Keuchel (neck). ... LHP Matt Boyd, whose wife delivered a baby daughter Thursday, will make his scheduled start for the Tigers on Saturday but won't join the team in New York until Tuesday.
