Brandon Drury's tie-breaking pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth inning Wednesday afternoon completed a laborious comeback for the host New York Mets, who snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-7 win over the Washington Nationals in the completion of a game suspended due to rain Tuesday night.

The Mets overcame a pair of three-run deficits before Drury's hit gave New York its first lead since its previous win, a 5-3 victory over the Miami Marlins on Aug. 4. The Nationals have gone 2-8 in their last 10 games since dealing several stars at the trade deadline July 30.

The Mets trailed 7-6 entering the eighth, when J.D. Davis laced a leadoff double. Jonathan Villar followed with a bunt, but Mason Thompson (0-1) threw the ball away as Davis scored.

Villar advanced to second on the throw, took third on a groundout by James McCann and scored when Drury poked a single just beyond second base for his 10th hit in 21 pinch-hit at-bats this season.

Trevor May (5-2) struck out one in a perfect eighth to earn the win. Edwin Diaz whiffed one in a 1-2-3 ninth for his 24th save.

Juan Soto hit a three-run homer in the top of the first Tuesday for the Nationals and Dominic Smith had an RBI double in the bottom half before the game was suspended in the top of the second. Washington extended the lead to 4-1 upon the resumption of the second Wednesday, when Victor Robles delivered an RBI double off the glove of Smith in left field.

The Mets tied the game for the first time in the third, when Jeff McNeil (single) and Davis (double) sandwiched RBI hits around a run-scoring groundout by Michael Conforto.

The Nationals again went ahead by three runs in the fifth when Luis Garcia hit a two-run double and scored on Riley Adams' single. Conforto answered with an RBI single in the bottom half and Pete Alonso pulled the Mets within a run with a run-scoring double in the seventh.

Carlos Carrasco, who started for the Mets Tuesday, gave up four runs in one inning. Rich Hill, originally scheduled to start Thursday afternoon, relieved Carrasco and surrendered three runs in three innings.

Paolo Espino was charged with one run in one inning Tuesday for the Nationals. Joe Ross, slated to start Wednesday's originally scheduled game, relieved Espino and gave up four runs in five innings.
