Yankees 3, Mariners 1: Andy Pettitte hurled 7 1/3 strong innings to become the 47th pitcher in major-league history to reach 250 career victories as New York defeated host Seattle.

Jayson Nix delivered run-scoring singles in the fifth and seventh innings as the Yankees won for the fifth time in six games. David Robertson worked out of an eighth-inning jam and Mariano Rivera allowed two runners to reach in the ninth before striking out Nick Franklin on three pitches for his 22nd save in 23 opportunities and 630th of his career.

Pettitte (5-3) struck out six and allowed one run and three hits while recording the milestone win. He leads all active pitchers in career victories.

Robinson Cano had a run-scoring single in the first and Seattle’s Michael Morse knotted the score with a fourth-inning sacrifice fly. Nix’s run-scoring single in the fifth put the Yankees ahead to stay and he added an insurance run with his seventh-inning single.

Seattle starter Joe Saunders (4-6) allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings to drop to 4-2 at home.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Mariners 3B Kyle Seager went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. … New York CF Brett Gardner had three hits while Nix and LF Vernon Wells each had two. … Seattle placed C Jesus Sucre (hand) on the disabled list and recalled INF Carlos Triunfel from Triple-A Tacoma. In addition, 1B Kendrys Morales left after five innings due to a stiff back.
