Chris Denorfia doubled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to lead the San Diego Padres to a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.

Knotted 3-3, the Reds brought in fire-balling left-hander Aroldis Chapman to begin the bottom of the ninth. Chapman (1-2) struck out the first batter and walked Chase Headley before getting Nick Hundley to fly out. Denorfia came up next and sent a double to left as Headley raced all the way around for the walk-off win.

Heath Bell (6-0) got credit for the win for the Padres, who moved back into first place in the National League wild card race.

The Reds threatened in the eighth, loading the bases against Mike Adams. But Joe Thatcher came on and got Miguel Cairo to pop out to end the inning.

The Padres held a 3-1 lead after Will Venable’s solo homer in the third, but Cincinnati pulled within one when Travis Wood reached on an infield single and tied it up in the fifth when Joey Votto reached Jon Garland for a solo blast - his 36th of the season.

Votto had given the Reds the first lead of the game with an RBI single in the top of the first.
